Sally Russell

General Manager, Brighton Harbour Hotel & Spa

Sally Russell has been a General Manager with Harbour Hotels for almost five years. During this time she has run two very different Harbour Hotels, starting with Chichester Harbour Hotel & Spa and moving to Brighton Harbour Hotel & Spa in 2021.

How did you start your career in Hospitality?

I started as a waiter in my local village pub, which served amazing fresh food. It was run by an old school Hospitality couple who taught me all the tricks of looking after guests and the really undervalued skill of tapping a beer barrel!

What skills have helped you get to where you are today?

Empathy with our guests and my teams, people in the industry and our suppliers. Plus a fair bit of courage and the ability to laugh!

What’s your favourite part about your role?

Not knowing who is going to walk through the door at any given moment – it has certainly given rise to some good chuckles.

Did you ever have a mentor or advisor?

I was a part of as many conversations as I could – with guests, teams and the industry, even if it was only to listen.

What advice would you give someone looking to follow in your footsteps?

Listen to people and learn as many ‘basic’ skills as quickly as you can. You can progress quickly in Hospitality if you have basic skills and passion.

Do you have a highlight from your time working with Harbour Hotels?

I’m not sure if it is a highlight but the teamwork involved in the continual opening and closing of the hotels during COVID was a real masterclass and made me very proud.

Do you have aspirations for your future?

Health and happiness!
