The Ship is back!

Chichester Harbour Hotel re-launches its restaurant as 'The Ship'

January 2020

Chichester Harbour Hotel is delighted to welcome back ‘The Ship’; re-launching its restaurant concept under the new name, in a nod to the remarkable heritage of the property.

Chef Patron Alex Aitken is at the helm, introducing a modern edge on comforting classics at this relaxed all-day bar and restaurant. Alex, who champions local, seasonal and sustainable produce, will be working with local chefs and suppliers to showcase the region’s best flavours; you may even spot them at the local farmers markets and food fairs, looking for inspirational new producers.

Alex Aitken has worked with Harbour Hotels for a decade, principally in Christchurch, Mudeford and Southampton. Previously, he had a successful career with his own restaurant, Le Poussin, in the New Forest. As a 'self-taught' chef he's won many accolades, including the coveted Michelin Star, which he subsequently held for 15 years.

Since joining Harbour Hotels, Alex and his teams have received multiple awards and industry recognition, including a prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmande for The Kings Arms, Christchurch; something they hope to achieve for The Ship, as a mark of great quality food at an accessible price. At Alex's Jetty restaurant in Mudeford, they were awarded the coveted title of UK Seafood restaurant of the year and made Square Meal’s top 100 restaurants outside of London (the only restaurant to achieve this in Dorset and Hampshire). The Jetty restaurant in Ocean Village, Southampton has received significant national recognition and is considered the best in town.

Head Chef Neil Arkley, who was part of the opening team at The Jetty in Ocean Village, has joined Alex at The Ship, working together to deliver a menu of classics, with a modern slant. From light bites, to the new salad bar, local cheese boards and three-course dining, there’s something for everyone.

Starters feature playful Chorizo Egg and Soldiers, alongside a South Coast Crab Pot / Croquette. Expect classics, such as Alex’s Cod and Crab and Fish and Chips, as well as Steaks and Whole fish for your main; with the option of ‘Surf n Turf’, or ‘Surf n Surf’ additions. Dessert has to be Alex’s signature ‘Oops I’ve Dropped My Ice Cream’, or perhaps Lemon Meringue Cheesecake will take your fancy!
